The news about the (finally) released Aerosoft A330 did not escape our notice - and rightly so! Because wherever gaming is written or talked about, simulations are a topic.
This year, for example, there have been numerous simulations to see on social media. The latest include Supermarket Simulator , PowerWash Simulator , Euro Truck Simulator 2 and, brand new in German-speaking countries, the Aerosoft A330 .
Although we ourselves have tested most simulation games briefly rather than playing them for a long time, we still had a question that kept coming up: Why are so many people fascinated by these games? What sets them apart from other genres or, better said, what makes them so appealing?
To find out, I read through various articles and forums and summarized the most interesting reasons here.
- Control and creativity : This seems to be a kind of rebellion against reality, where many people feel overwhelmed by outside influences and factors they cannot control. Simulations, on the other hand, allow players to control or build complex systems - while remaining in full control. Whether it is managing a city in SimCity , running a farm in Stardew Valley , or creating a family in The Sims , these games give players a strong sense of agency. They also offer the freedom to express their creativity within a structured environment.
- Escapism : These games allow you to live alternate lives or explore worlds you wouldn't experience in real life. Whether it's piloting planes, running a business, or simulating a completely different life, simulations offer a form of escapism that can be both relaxing and immersive.
- Relaxation and Zen : Not everyone wants to bring real-life combat into their free time, or in other words, not everyone finds a battle royale relaxing. Games like Animal Crossing or Planet Zoo, on the other hand, can have a calming effect and offer players a stress-free way to unwind. The focus on slow, methodical gameplay is in stark contrast to action-packed games, making them a relaxing experience for many.
- Personal achievements and progress : Simulations typically offer clear goals and progress markers, which are rewarding because players can see the fruits of their efforts. Whether it's building a successful city or business, that feeling of accomplishment can be very satisfying.
Life simulation games were and are so popular because there is no "winning". There is a point where you may have achieved everything that is possible, but the game does not end. There are no credits. Instead, you can keep playing, keep living, continue to expand the small garden in your tastefully furnished house and shape the world you have created according to your own wishes.
