Sony has released the PlayStation 5 Slim, a revised version of the popular PS5. But what are the differences to the regular PS5? Is an upgrade worth it or not? Here we compare both models and show what has really changed.

1. Design and size

The most obvious difference is the design: the PS5 Slim is about 30% smaller than the original PS5. This makes it more compact and lighter, making it better for smaller spaces or tight TV setups. The futuristic design remains, but the side panels are now divided into four removable segments.

2. Drive and modularity

A special feature of the PS5 Slim is the optional, removable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive . While the regular PS5 was sold either with or without a drive, the Digital Edition of the PS5 Slim can be retrofitted with a drive. This means more flexibility for players who later decide to play physical games.

3. Storage capacity

Another difference is the internal storage capacity. The PS5 Slim comes with 1 TB of storage , while the standard model came with 825 GB . This means a bit more space for games, which is definitely a plus given the increasing size of AAA titles.

4. Technical performance

There are no major differences in terms of hardware . Both models use the same AMD Ryzen Zen 2 processor , an RDNA 2 GPU and 16 GB GDDR6 RAM . So the performance in games remains identical - there are no higher frame rates or shorter loading times with the Slim version.

5. Price and availability

The PS5 Slim replaces the standard PS5 and is sold at similar prices. The version with a drive costs €549.99 , while the Digital Edition is available for €449.99 . If you want to upgrade to a drive later, you will have to invest an additional €119.99.

Conclusion: Is the PS5 Slim worth it?

Whether an upgrade is worth it depends on what is important to you. If you already own a PS5, there is no compelling reason to switch as the performance remains the same. However, if you prefer a more compact console or want to benefit from the modular drive solution, the PS5 Slim could be an interesting option.
