In recent weeks, rumors surrounding the PS5 Pro have intensified, with speculation rife about a potential imminent reveal. Sources claim that Sony's as-yet-unknown upgraded console is at least "100% in development," regardless of when it will be released.

The PS5 Pro would be a mid-range reboot between the PS5 and its successor, which we'll call the PS6. We expect a PS5 Pro to follow the example of its predecessor, the PS4 Pro. This was basically a more powerful version of the base PS4 console. Although it had the same DualShock 4 controller and games library, it offered higher performance and 4K resolution for certain titles. It was a console for gamers who wanted extra power to enjoy PlayStation games at the highest level.

Building on the foundations of the base PS5 with refreshed internal components and perhaps a slight visual redesign, the PS5 Pro would likely follow a similar approach. However, it should be noted that this is an evolution of the current PS5 hardware and not a full-fledged successor to the PS6.

The PS5 Pro is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2024. That would place it about four years after the PS5 launches. This would be slightly longer than the three-year gap between the PS4 launch in November 2013 and the PS4 Pro launch in November 2016.

PS5 Pro Price: Unconfirmed

When it comes to price, there is little to give us an indication of how much we will need to save up front, but the price is rumored to be $499 in the US.

With the PSVR 2 ($549 launch price), Sony has proven that it is not afraid to charge a premium price for new hardware.

PS5 Pro Specs: Speculations about the technical characteristics

When it comes to the PS5 Pro's specs, two words keep cropping up: 8K and ray tracing. We'd expect these to be the two areas Sony is targeting with any form of revamped PS5 hardware.

In addition, there are rumors about the introduction of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) , a new scaling technology that promises comparable results to Nvidia's DLSS and is particularly optimized for high-resolution gaming in 4K and beyond ( TechStory ; LevelUp )

In April 2024, The Verge reportedly received several documents containing varying degrees of detail.

This data appeared in The Verge’s report:

  • GPU : 45% faster than standard PS5, improved ray tracing architecture
  • CPU : Same as PS5, but with new mode (clock frequency of 3.85 GHz, about 10% faster)
  • Memory : 13.7 GB for gaming, memory bandwidth increased by 28% (576 GB/s)
  • PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) : Upscaling technology for better frame rates and image quality, similar to Nvidia DLSS
  • Goal : Improved graphics, higher resolutions, smoother ray tracing

PS5 Pro Design: Improvement of the PS5 shape?

The PlayStation 5 Pro will have a slightly wider and similar design to the PS5. There are three black lines on the front of the console, and the cover can be used with the PS5 Slim. On the front, there are two USB-C ports and the power button. There is confirmation of a model without a disc drive, but there could also be a version with a removable disc drive.

PS5 Pro: Is it worth it?

We are curious to see how the PS5 will integrate into the existing market. Sony already has two powerful consoles: the PS5 and the recently released PS5 Slim. Considering that 8K gaming, which would be theoretically possible, is unlikely to be realized in practice as the hardware itself might be overwhelmed, it remains to be seen whether the additional benefits of the Pro version will be enough to convince gamers to invest again.

So what use is a high-tech console if there are no games that can be played on it?

It will be crucial whether the PS5 Pro can keep up with hardware advances, although overall it represents an interesting development for hardcore gamers.
