Retro nostalgia seems to have reached the (former?) high-tech pioneers as well. In this case, this nostalgia has found an entrepreneurial expression in the founder of Oculus VR in the form of his latest

Ventures ModRetro found. ModRetro has three products (in different colors) in its range so far, but the ModRetro Chromatic Gameboy is the one that has caused the most excitement in recent days.

👾 The ModRetro Chromatic is a new, advanced Game Boy.

🖌️ A pixel and color accurate way to enjoy Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.

😎 Thanks to its super bright IPS LCD, it also works outdoors.

📆 It costs €185.95 to pre-order, but will not be delivered until Christmas 2024.

Designed by Palmer Luckey, the man behind Oculus Quest, the ModRetro Chromatic claims to be the ultimate evolution of the Nintendo Game Boy. It features a 2.56-inch pixel-perfect IPS display with a sapphire cover that's optimized to work flawlessly in sunlight.

The ModRetro Chromatic can play Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges and features a magnesium-aluminum alloy body and a D-pad and buttons made of semi-crystalline PBT polymer.

The device can be powered by either 3 AA batteries or a special lithium-ion battery that can be charged via the console and offers a runtime of 24 hours. Additionally, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack, a "custom ultra-loud speaker module" and is backwards compatible with the Link cable. A USB-C port is available for "lag-free" video output.
Luckey has revealed to media that he doesn't see the ModRetro Chromatic as "a way to make money." Instead, he sees it as "a way to make the world's greatest tribute to the Game Boy, something I'll be proud of for a very long time."
The ModRetro Chromatic costs $199 or €185.95 for buyers in Germany. Pre-orderers will receive a free copy of Tetris for Chromatic.
It remains to be seen how well and widely the ModRetro Chromatic will be received. There are many similar products on the market and we cannot see a clear unique selling point (USP) of ModRetro Chromatic to justify the 2 to 3 times higher price.
