As a big fan of indie games, I couldn't leave the topic untouched.
Indie games are known for their innovation and willingness to explore unconventional ideas. Without the pressure of major publishers, indie developers have the freedom to take creative risks and develop unique game mechanics.
- Mechanical Innovations : Indie games often experiment with new and unique gameplay mechanics. One example is Braid , a puzzle platformer that uses time manipulation as a core gameplay element. Such innovative mechanics provide players with fresh and challenging experiences.
- Narrative Techniques : Many indie games rely on innovative narrative techniques to convey deep and emotional stories. Undertale is an example of how players can drastically influence decisions, the plot, and the ending of the game. This narrative flexibility encourages a strong emotional connection between players and the game.
Now the time is approaching for Gamescom 2024, and we are particularly excited about two indie games that will be there this year, according to the Gamescom website.
- The Eternal Life of Goldman
Hand-drawn and jump 'n' run: For me, that's a dream combination. When I saw the trailer for "The Eternal Life of Goldman," I immediately thought of the brilliant jump 'n' run "DuckTales" (1990, Gameboy). Just like Scrooge McDuck back then, the new, equally older hero Goldman runs and jumps through the levels with a walking stick. The game is complemented by the breathtakingly beautiful graphics, which immediately make you want more.
“The Eternal Life of Goldman” is a lively yet dark adventure that combines legends, fairy tales and myths. The game looks at the genre from an unusual perspective and offers surprises at every corner
You arrive in the archipelago with a strange mission: to kill the Deity, a mystical being that everyone talks about but no one has seen. To find the Deity, you must delve deep into the many secrets of these islands. You will discover a place marked by tragedy, full of eccentric characters and remarkable contrasts.
Well, if that isn't pure indie, then I don't know what is. The combination of meaning and art is what makes indie games special. And here it looks like we won't be disappointed.
2. Farewell North
In Farewell North, you take on the unique role of a Border Collie who brings color back to your human's world. As players explore the Scottish Highlands-inspired archipelago, they'll discover memories that bring color back to the world around them. If you're a dog lover like me, then you'll definitely feel a warm feeling in your heart when you watch the trailer, if you haven't already.
Hidden objects, puzzles, and other secrets are hidden throughout the grey landscape that will support the adventure game's message of moving on and letting go.
We are excited to see how other gamers react to Farewell North. The game will be released on August 15th. We're sure to meet some people at Gamescom who have already played the game.
